NUGGET POINT LIGHT HOUSE

This scenic place is located in the Cattlins in the souther island
close to the town Kaka Point. The light was lit the first time in
July 1870 as a oil light. In 1949 turned into electricity. It is
76m above sea level and flashes every 12 seconds and can be seen
about 35km (19NM). |

The Museum tells the historical story of the area from the early
Whalers, goldmining, fishing, sawmilling, stone quarrying to present
day farming.

an old Mori trail used by Ngai Tahu. John Turnbull Thomson was the
first European to discover the pass. |

The picnic area near Roaring Meg Creek nearby an old powerhouse.
This was a feared area in the early days as the wagons struggling
through the gorge on the muddy roads were often held up here and
robbed. The steep drop to the creek was an easy place for the disposal
of the highwaymen's victims.
The power station was constructed by the Otago Central Power Board
during 1934-1936. |

Operated by the Bluff Harbour Board, as a lighted tower and boat
shed the pilot cutter from 1877, and was replaced by this building
in 1912. Originally manned by two people until the early 1930's
when four wer stationed there. Additional for the Harbourmaster
and Pilots were also sited on the Pilot Station Reserve. [org. plate
